The debut of the Tour de France Netflix show has been announced for June.

On Monday, the first installment of the show was showcased at CanneSeries, the TV extension of Cannes Film Festival.

At the screening, it was suggested that the series will commence during the Criterium du Dauphine, set to start on June 4th.

In March 2022, Netflix and A.S.O., the organizer of the Tour de France, revealed their collaboration to create a documentary series focused on the 2022 race.

Despite the initial announcement, there has not been much word about the series from Netflix, in comparison to their other upcoming sport-related programs, like Full Swing, which has had more publicity.

At the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona on 28 February, the co-CEO of the streaming service, Greg Peter, revealed a teaser trailer. The title of the docuseries, as indicated by the trailer, is ‘Tour de France: Au Coer du peloton’, which is French for ‘in the heart of the peloton’.

In the initial episode, the emphasis is on Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl

The series will follow the journeys of eight teams at the 2022 Tour de France, with the first episode of CanneSeries focusing mainly on Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl, according to RMC.

The RMC episode examines the choices of head coach Patrick Lefevere, the failure to pick Julian Alaphilippe and the victory at the event of Fabio Jakobsen, who had experienced a life-threatening accident at the 2020 Tour of Poland.

Yann Le Bourbouac’h, one of the producers, told RMC that they had strived to merge documentary and cinema by focusing on the characters in the race.

Le Bourbouac’h shed light on Fabio’s story, mentioning that he had nearly not made it two years ago and that now, two years later, he was competing in and winning a stage of the Tour de France.

RMC will also present an episode that will center around Groupama-FDJ’s Thibaut Pinot in addition to the series about Jumbo-Visma’s Jonas Vingegaard, who won the overall competition.

In the trailer, Pinot remarked about the immense pressure to perform when on a French team at the Tour de France, given his French nationality.

The Tour de France series is being created by a collaboration between Quad and Box to Box Films, called Quadbox.

Box to Box films, the sports film producer, is responsible for the widely acclaimed Formula 1 series Drive to Survive that can be seen on Netflix.

In 2020, the Netflix documentary called Drive to Survive caused a noticeable spike in enthusiasm for Formula 1. Global analytics firm Nielson revealed that every month, between March 2000 and 2021, an average of 2.7 million people between the ages of 16 and 35 developed an interest in the sport.

Le Bourbouac’h gave an interview to RMC and spoke about the ways in which the Tour de France series differs from Drive to Survive.

He illuminated the fact that Formula 1 is a championship where it is possible to adjust one’s narrative arcs from race to race, whilst with the Tour de France, it is an entirely different type of story-telling, as it does not pause for the observer.

No matter the distinctions between the two programs, should Netflix’s Tour de France series be as successful as Drive to Survive, there could be a huge rise in attention to the Tour de France and cycling in general.

What is the subject matter of the Tour de France documentary on Netflix?

The competition between Tadej Pogačar and Jonas Vingegaard during stage 17 of the 2022 Tour de France was intense.

Netflix announced that its Tour de France series will track and analyze the actions of everyone involved in the event, from cyclists to team managers, to get an understanding of the different elements at play.

The documentary will not only give viewers a glimpse into the race itself, but also the ‘behind-the-scenes’ of the 8 teams involved. From the preparation for the Grand Boucle’s stages to the final minutes of crossing the finish line, this promises to be an insightful and educational experience.

Yann Le Moenner, the general director of A.S.O., explains the upcoming docuseries will highlight how the race is the ‘ultimate challenge’ by utilizing a narrative structure.

As per Laurent-Eric Le Lay, head of sport at France Televisions, he claimed that it would “provide spectators with the opportunity to have a taste of the daily life of athletes and teams”.

Drive to Survive has a touch of drama to it, and gives followers of the sport a glimpse of what they would not generally get to experience.

Cyclingnews has revealed that 70 access passes have been given away for capturing footage at the 2022 Tour de France for the show. It has been reported that each of the eight participating teams has its own film crew, and a different one is trying to document the overall story of the race.

Omitted from the list is UAE Team Emirates, the squad which Tadej Pogačar won the 2021 Tour de France with and came in second in the 2022 edition.

The inclusion of Team Jumbo-Visma in the documentary will give viewers an understanding of the journey that eventual winner Jonas Vingegaard took. If UAE Team Emirates and Pogačar were also featured, it would offer an opportunity to witness the fight for first and second place from both perspectives.

It has been reported that Cyclingnews indicated UAE Team Emirates declined to feature in the documentary since teams were compensated €50,000 for taking part.

In an interview with Belgian newspaper Het Nieuwsblad, Team Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl’s general manager Patrick Lefevere labelled the sum offered by UAE Team Emirates as “peanuts”. It is possible that the amount of money was not considered sufficient to be worth the disruption that a film crew would bring to the Tour.

Recap: Tour de France in 2022

In 2022, Jonas Vingegaard was crowned the victor of the Tour de France.

The 109th rendition of the Tour de France in 2022 began with an individual time trial located in Copenhagen, Denmark.

The competition was promoted as a clash between the titleholder Tadej Pogačar and the power of Team Jumbo-Visma, which became apparent right from the start.

Jumbo-Visma maintained the race’s direction during the first week, and then Pogačar earned the yellow jersey with a pair of consecutive stage victories.

Once the race reached the Alps, the cyclists of Team Jumbo-Visma tested the ability of Pogačar to hold his lead. In the end, they were successful, with Jonas Vingegaard overtaking him and claiming the lead.

Vingegaard held onto the top spot in the Pyrenees and confirmed his standing in the last single-rider race.

Team Jumbo-Visma’s Wout van Aert was the winner of the points classification and, along with the yellow jersey, Vingegaard took the king of the mountains classification. This represented a historic first since 1969, when one team had quickly taken all three of the Tour de France jerseys.

Ineos Grenadiers’ Geraint Thomas achieved a third place finish, building upon his success from his Tour de Suisse victory in 2022.

During the summer heatwave of 2022, when temperatures reached 40˚C, climate change activists took to the route of the Tour de France to stage protests.

Several cyclists had to step out of the competition because of Covid-19, with Magnus Cort of EF Education-EasyPost being one of them. He was quite active during the first week and had been in the running for the King of the Mountains title.

Ahead of the Tour de France in 2023, an upcoming Netflix series will give viewers an inside look at what is expected to be a thrilling event.

It is possible for individuals to achieve success without having any formal education. While a degree does offer advantages, it is not absolutely essential for someone to make it in life. There are many examples of people who have gone on to become successful without having any college experience. Instead, they have relied on their own determination and drive to reach their goals.
